The currents coming from Antarctica have a significant impact on the climate of the Chilean coast. This climate is characterized by the presence of overcast skies with dense coastal fogs known as “camanchacas” or “garúas.” The lack of rainfall and cooler-than-usual temperatures for this latitude allow these fogs to penetrate the valleys, and in the afternoons, cold winds blow from the sea inland. These conditions are typical of the Coastal Range hills, and along with the marked temperature differences between day and night during the summer, they create an ideal environment for our cool-climate varieties to achieve slow and even ripening.
